The Plymouth and District Organists’ Association, founded in 1929, is the forum for organ enthusiasts in Plymouth and the surrounding area of Devon and Cornwall. Membership is open to organists, organ builders and anyone who enjoys the instrument and its music.
The Association generally holds nine or ten meetings a year, including an Annual General Meeting in July. There are no meetings in August, December or January.
The fixtures include visits to hear and play local organs, recitals, lecture/demonstrations, masterclasses and a yearly ‘Members Entertain’ evening. An annual dinner is held every February. In the past excursions have been arranged to Liverpool, London and Brittany.
Members also receive the Association’s quarterly magazine 'News and Notes'. This contains details of forthcoming events, reports of the Association’s visits, reviews of recitals and articles of general interest to organists and choir trainers.
The Plymouth and District Organists’ Association is affiliated to the Incorporated Association of Organists. This enables members to participate in all IAO activities and entitles them to all the benefits and services provided by the IAO. IAO members can subscribe at a reduced rate to the magazine Organists’ Review.
The Plymouth and District Organists’ Association organises the National Young Organists’ Competition. Started in 1982, this is now held once every two years. Past winners, several of whom have gone on to become cathedral organists or recitalists, are:
1982 Alison Howell
1983 Theo Saunders
1984 Simon Over
1985 Jeremy Filsell
1986 Philip Scriven
1987 Alex Martin

1992 Simon Lumby
1994 Timothy Cooke
1997 Teilhard Scott

In September 2003 the Association launched a training scheme for organists which aims to encourage pianists to learn the organ. For further information about this, see the separate 'Training Scheme' page in the list on the left above.
